Over the past decade people in the United States have become fatter and fatter.
The boom in weight can be attributed to the food that Americans decide to put into their bodies, the portion sizes and the lack of exercise, but when a 7-year-old girl has to go on a diet, due to being obese, it is time to rethink some things.
When Dara-Lynn Weiss, mother of the 7-year-old, named Bea, heard that her daughter was obese, she decided to put her on a diet.
Weiss, a New York writer and media producer, spoke about her journey in the book "The Heavy: A Mother, A Daughter, A Diet."
"It was incredibly hard. I take great joy in food. My daughter takes great joy in food. It played an important part in our relationship. Not just 'Oh mommy can I have a snack?' But 'Let's do this food thing together. Let's go out for ice cream together. Let's bake cookies together.' And to have to change that aspect of our time together was a little scary," Weiss said to thestar.com.
However, Weiss was able to remain strong and hold onto the diet plan that she instilled for Bea who has maintained the diet, resulting in her keeping off the weight she lost.
"She is healthy. And as she gets older, she's increasingly independently managing her diet on her own, which is great," Weiss was to thestar.com.
In an article that Weiss published in Vogue discussing how she policed Bea's food intake-complete with an "after" photo of her daughter controversy ensued as some people felt that "Weiss was being selfish and had superficial values," according to thestar.com.
"I think I approached it in this very naïve way. I didn't remember how loaded Vogue is in topics like weight and beauty and little girls and how we feel about ourselves. I think I might have been a little more sensitive to that had I really thought it through," Weiss said to thestar.com.
This story and her ordeal further details the issue of society-Americans don't like being looked upon by the international community as "fat," yet don't agree with a mother not wanting her daughter to lose weight and be healthy.
With all the diet plans and exercise fads out today, it is obvious that people don't like being fat. There is no discussion on the matter.
But, wanting to lose weight to be healthy and losing weight to be a model are two different things.
Maybe those people who are offended just feel that Weiss is a bad parent for wanting her kid to be healthy?
Maybe they are just jealous that Bea lost the weight and they are still fat?
