As many pundits, sports and otherwise have pointed out, this Super Bowl wasn't the best for the commercial-viewing audience, but that doesn't mean there weren't superb, thought-provoking ads out there.
Here is the Top 10 as far as this writer is concerned.
1) It was the first commercial to air and it belonged to Audi: Named "Audi goes to prom," it starts off with a teenager getting ready to go to prom. However, the twist, he is going alone, and he isn't happy about it. His frown is turned outside when his father gives him the keys to his Audi S6.
Revving the engine and blasting the music, the power of the S6 takes over. He begins to feel confident, so much so that upon arriving at the Prom and parking in the sport designate for the principal, he marches right up to the prom queen and gives her a kiss that even Bar Refaeli would be jealous at.
The black eye received courtesy of the prom king is well worth it as he screams in utter ecstasy on the drive home.
2) Taco Bell made their mark with the "partying generics" reliving their youth. The standout part is during the end when a police car, assuming teenager were getting drunk in the parking lot of an convenience store realizes that they aren't teenagers.
3) Not a real commercial, but David Letterman did his part putting a laugh on people faces. During, what appeared to be a game of catch with a youngster, Letterman proceeds to give a motivational speech. His statement includes lines like, "If you work hard, maybe one day you can even make it to the Super Bowl."
Upon hearing this from the talk-show host the youngster replies, just as any youngster would, with, "thanks mister."
However, Letterman isn't speaking to the him, as the camera pans out and reveals Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Andrew Luck, Luck says, with a bit of disappoint, "thanks Dave."
4) As those who have to wake up at 6 a.m. every weekday, for the 9-5 grind know to well, it can get very depressing in the office-especially on Monday, but the people at Volkswagen don't believe that is the way it has to be. Maybe, all one needs to "don't worry and be happy" is a Volkswagen. Oh, and for those who feel this ad was racist--grow up. It was funny. A Minnesotan with a Jamican accent--classic.
5) Imagine throwing the house party of the year, but having it all come to an end with the unexpected return of the parents. Well, that is what happens in this ad from Pepsi-Cola Company.
Who knew that all a teenager needs to mellow out his parents is a Pepsi.
6) No one knows what it is like to him. His life isn't easy, but still, he would do anything for love, but, he won't do that. That thing he won't do is being eaten, which is understandable, he is an M&M.
7) This ad even made men cry-after three years of not seeing one another a Budweiser Clydesdale runs back to the man who raised him in the barn.
8) Ever had an argument in a library, but needed to stay quiet? Oreo shows how one can do both.
9) Want a pistachio? How about "cracking it Gundam Style?
10) It is a kiss that this nerd will never forget, but a kiss the rest of us wishes they could.
Honorable mention:
The banned commercial from SodaStream. What a better way to prove the point than by blowing up soda bottles belonging to Coco-Cola and Pepsi-Co (the main Super Bowl sponsor). Wonder why Pepsi forced CBS to banned this ad from running?
