Caleb Moore has died from complications following a snowmobile crash during the Winter X Games last week. Upon heading the news, friends, athletes and celebrities took to Twitter to share their condolences.
Moore, 25, crashed during a snowmobile freestyle contest last Thursday. He wasn't able to complete a back flip and the skis of the snowmobile dug into the snow. The 450-pound snowmobile slammed into Moore as he tumbled down the landing ramp. He was knocked unconscious but he later came to and didn't know what happened.
Moore was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital for a concussion, but doctors found bleeding around his heart. He was then rushed to Grand Junction's St. Mary's Hospital where he received emergency heart surgery. Doctors also found a complication involving his brain.
His family announced on Thursday that Moore died.
"We are deeply saddened by Caleb Moore's passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Wade and Michelle, his brother, Colten, and the entire Moore family," ESPN, which organizes and televises the X Games, said in a statement on CNN.com.
"As a result of this accident we will conduct a thorough review of this discipline and adopt any appropriate changes to future X Games ... when the world's best compete at the highest level in any sport, risks remain. Caleb was a four-time X Games medalist attempting a move he has landed several times previously."
This is the first time a fatality occurred in the 17-year history of the X Games.
Moore won a freestyle bronze medal in his first X Games 2010. He won another bronze in 2011. In 2012 he won best trick silver, finishing behind his brother, Colten, who won gold.
The death of Caleb Moore caused a huge reaction on Twitter. His name quickly became a top trend as celebrities and fellow extreme athletes gave their condolences and commented on the death of their friend.
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. May you rest in peace Caleb Moore... #XGames
