A Secret Service dog fell and died while working on the roof of a New Orleans parking deck where Vice President Joe Biden was speaking for a fundraiser.
The Secret Service has lost a member. A Beglian Malinous bomb-sniffing dog was investigation the roof of the six-story garage near The Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans to ensure that Biden would be safe as he spoke at a fundraiser for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, CNN reports.
Federal agents took the dog to the Metairie Small Animal Hospital via motorcade, but veterinarians were unable to save it.
The death was a "tragic accident," Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told CNN. This is the first time an accident like this has occurred, the Secret Service said.
The Secret Service started using bomb dogs in 1975. They prefer Belgian Malinois because they are small and don't have long hair, so they're able to work in the heat. They're also a friendly breed.
Through the program, each dog spend 20 weeks training with it's owner before working. The dogs usually go to the handler when they retire after 10 years.
