Passengers on a Turkish Airlines flight had to scare of a lifetime when the plane they were on was struck by lightning and burst into flames. A passenger on board caught the ordeal on video.
The Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Izmir, Turkey took off around 11 p.m. on January 24. It then hit a patch of bad weather and was struck by lightning. The burst caused one of the engines to go on fire.
The lights went off on the plane and the passengers started to panic. The whole ordeal was caught on video by a passenger on board, Bertan Atay, and another shot from the ground shows the fiery plane leaving streaks across the sky. Passengers can be heard gasping and expressing fear on board.
Miraculously, the pilot was able to activate the motor's own fire extinguishing gear. He declared an emergency and landed the plane at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport without any further issues. Firefighters greeted the plane when it landed to put out the fire.
