Costa Cruise Ship Worker Dies After Falling into Ventilation Shaft

A Costa cruise ship member has died after falling into a ventilation shaft.

Sahid Bin Fauzi, a 47-year-old man from Indonesia fell into the ventilation shaft of the Costa Serena when he was repairing the fans on the ventilation system. Co-workers reported him missing and he was later found dead inside the ventilation shaft, the Genoa newspaper reports.

The incident took place on January 17. Costa Cruises, the company of the Costa Concordia, which crashed off the coast of Italy, released a statement about the issue with few details.

"It seems that the crewmember fell inside a ventilation duct where he was performing some maintenance works," Costa Cruises said, according to Cruise Critic. "The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation."

The cruise line followed appropriate procedure and authorities were notified about the incident. The cruise line contacted Fauzi's family to express their condolences and to offer their support.

The 3,700-passenger Costa Serena is a relatively new ship that entered service in 2007. It was off the coast of Argentina on a 10-night South America cruise when the tragedy occurred.
