American Airlines got a makeover. The major U.S. airline unveiled a new look for the first time since 1968.

Now that a new year has begun, American Airlines will have a new look.

"Since placing our landmark aircraft order in July of 2011, we've been building anticipation toward a moment in time when the outside of our aircraft reflects the progress we've made to modernize our airline on the inside. Today marks important progress in that journey as we unveil a new and updated look for the first time in more than 40 years,"American's Chairman and CEO Tom Horton said before unveiling the new design.

The airlines unveiled the new look online. It is featured on a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft which will be in service starting Jan. 31. The new look features the striped of the American flag on the back wing and the company even has a new logo now.

"Our new logo and livery are designed to reflect the passion for progress and the soaring spirit, which is uniquely American," said Virasb Vahidi, American's Chief Commercial Officer in a release. "Our core colors - red, white and blue have been updated to reflect a more vibrant and welcoming spirit. The new tail, with stripes flying proudly, is a bold reflection of American's origin and name. And our new flight symbol, an updated eagle, incorporates the many icons that people have come to associate with American, including the 'A' and the star."

Besides wanting to come up with a new look, American had to as they are ordering new-age jets that are made up on composite materials which can't be polished like the current plane bodies.

The new look will roll out fleet-wide gradually over time.

The change to the exterior is just one of many changes the airline is making. American will have 60 brand new aircrafts this year. The airline is also expanding its international service.
They're also getting more technologically advanced as flight attendants, pilots and workers will soon have their own tablets so they have provide information in an instant. The airline also upgraded their dining experience with new china and ore menu choices.
