Thousands of passengers fought with police and airport officials at Kunming Changshui International Airport in China.
CNN reported that the scene was chaos with passengers, police and staff at the airport clashing because of delays due to heavy fog. According to Xinhua News Agency, they airport had to cancel 434 flights last Thursday.
"Most travelers have waited for a very long time," passenger Lu Zhi-ming told Jinghua Times. "Without water and food, the travelers are screaming, shouting, crying in there. There is litter everywhere and everyone is infuriated."
China Daily reported that "heavy fog has lowered visibility at the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to no more than 50 meters since about 4 a.m."
The flights affected were mainly going to Shanghai, Beijing and Ghangzhou as well as internationally, reported China Daily.
"My flight has been postponed for five hours, but I can understand, as it was caused by bad weather," a passenger who didn't give their name said to China Daily.
Many passengers were stranded for three days due to heavy fog.
Xinhua reported that service desks were also damaged by passengers in the chaos as they tried to check for flight information themselves. By Saturday, flights had returned to normal.
CNN reported that this is the first time that Chinese passengers have taken these types of measures due to flight delays.
China.org.cn reported that the airport operator, the Yunnan Airport Group apologized for the delays and said that the airport which had only opened on June 28, lacked experience in dealing with this type of situation. Officials said, "We feel very sorry and regret it."
