Oscars 2017: 'Moonlight' Won Best Picture After 'La La Land' Was Mistakenly Declared As Winner

For the first time in the 89 years of the Oscars, the presenter gave the Best Picture award to the wrong winner. Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced that the musical film "La La Land," won the coveted award but after the winners gave their speech, it was announced that the drama "Moonlight" is the actual winner.

CNN Jordan Horowitz, one of the producers of "La La Land," announced that they actually lost, drawing gasps from the audience. Horowitz then announced that Moonlight actually won Best Picture at the Oscars.

He kept on repeating that it is not a joke, showing the card that Moonlight is the winner. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel and Beatty went back to the stage to explain the accidental announcement.

ABC reported that Kimmel joked that Steve Harvey caused the wrong announcement. Beatty explained that he was confused when he saw what is inside the car because it says that the Oscar for Best Picture is Emma Stone for "La La Land". The producers of "La La Land" eventually gave their Oscars to the Adele Romanski, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner, the producers of "Moonlight."

At the backstage interview, Emma Stone said that she is happy that "Moonlight" won the Oscar for Best Picture over "La La Land" as she describes it as one of the best films of all time. However, she said that the envelope for Best Actress was with her after she was announced as the recipient of the award.

Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlight, said that he is still speechless of what happened on his Twitter account. About the controversy of the envelope switching, he said that he does not mind it anymore.

"Moonlight" is a drama film about Chiron, a black, gay man who is in discovery of his own identity. It is adapted from an unproduced play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" written by Tarell Alvin McCraney. It stars Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert as the protagonist, playing in different time phases.
