Patrick Stewart Bids Goodbye To 'Professor X'

Sir Patrick Stewart is parking his Professor Charles "X" Xavier wheelchair as he officially confirms that he is retiring from playing the iconic Fox Marvel Universe role. The veteran actor comments come following the release of "Logan," which is also Hugh Jackman's swan song to the Wolverine character.

It is going to be a brand new era for the "X-Men" franchise moving forward as alongside Hugh Jackman, who is already hanging up his Adamantium Claws, Stewart also revealed that he, too, will be separating with the fan-favorite telepathic superhero. The 76-year-old sat down at a SiriusXM Town Hall with Jackman, as well as, "Logan" director, James Mangold, and shared how he became sure that it was time to retire his version of Professor X.

"The movie ended... and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over," he recalled, referring to watching the film when it premiered at the 67th Berlin International Festival last week. "So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, 'I'm done too. It's all over.'"

Since it has been confirmed that Stewart has a part in "Logan," there have already been rumblings that the British thespian is also planning to retire his mentor-type character. And while Jackman has very vocal about his plans of hanging up his Adamantium claws via Wolverine's third standalone, this is the first time that Stewart confirmed that he is ready to move on from the role he has been playing since 2000's "X-Men." In the following years, he continued to reprise Professor X appearing in a total 6 films including "Logan."

With the convoluted "X-Men" series continuity, the franchise is currently tackling the backstory of a younger Professor X, played by James McAvoy. But given the nature of these movies, the two iterations of the telepathic mutants both appeared in 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past." In the same film, a time-travelling Wolverine, still played by Jackman was also featured.

"Logan" is set to hit theaters starting next week, March 3. The film also features young actress Dafne Keene as Laura also known as X-23, Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce and Stephen Merchant as Caliban.
