It's the moment every performer dreads --- forgetting lines or blacking out onstage. That's exactly what happened to 70s teen idol David Cassidy while performing at The Canyon Club in California over the past weekend. The incident prompted him to finally admit publicly that he is suffering from dementia.
According to Billboard Magazine, the star struggled to get his act together onstage after forgetting the lyrics to his own songs and looked unable to walk. The scene was painful to watch by the thousands of fans who loved him since he starred in the 1970s musical sitcom "The Partridge Family".
The entertainer was always evasive in the past when he was questioned about his health. This led to speculations that Cassidy's slurred behavior was most likely due to his long battle with alcoholism which got him into legal trouble several times.
This time around, Cassidy sounded like he has accepted the reality of his condition during an interview with People Magazine. "I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I've been without any distractions," said the 66-year-old Partridge Family star.
Coincidentally, Cassidy's grandfather battled the same disease. His mother Evelyn Ward likewise suffered the same fate. But despite his dementia, Cassidy still vividly remembers that painful time when Ward passed away in 2012 at the age of 89.
"In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room. I feared I would end up that way," he also revealed to People.
Now that Cassidy has come clean regarding his health, his scheduled performances advertised on his website for March and June are now expected to be canceled. Known for hits such as "How Can I Be Sure", "Cherish" and "I Think I Love You", he was originally slated to perform in Rhode Island, New York, and Ohio before retiring from show business this December.
