"Nintendo Switch" will require a microSD card judging by the file sizes of the digital games that can be downloaded digitally to its internal storage. The official Japanese site of Nintendo revealed the download sizes for some of the digital games to be released on "Nintendo Switch" in the future.
According to VG24/7, most of the games can fit on the 32GB internal storage of the "Nintendo Switch." However, users of the console will not be able to install many games, hence, the need for external microSD card.
The same report indicates that games for "Nintendo Switch" such as "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will require 13.4 GigaBytes (GB) of free space while "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" would take up 8GB of space, and "Puyo Puyo Tetris" demands a space for 1.09GB. "Disgaea 5" would need 5.92GB, "Snipperclips" requires a space of 1.60GB, "I Am Setsuna" needs 1.40GB of space, "Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2" would need a whopping 32GB of space, and "Nobunaga's Ambition" checks in at 5GB.
That said, individual games for the "Nintendo Switch," some of them anyway, can be installed without the need for the microSD card. However, Nintendo recommends installing the large-sized games on the microSD card.
Gamespot reports that the "Nintendo Switch" requires users to provide external microSD card since part of the internal memory of the "Nintendo Switch" will be allocated for the console's operating system. A "Nintendo Switch" leak reveals that around 25.9GB of usable space will be available after installing the main firmware.
The largest available microSD card has a capacity of 512 GB. That said, the "Nintendo Switch" is designed to support microSD cards up to 2 terabytes (TB). However, 2 TB microSD cards are still not available.
