After a gunman opened fire on firefighters after they responded to a house fire in Webster, New York, killing two firefighters ABC News reported.
Police Chief Gerald L Pickering said "The responding firefighters, when they pulled up on the scene, were ... fired upon by one or more shooters," reported ABC News.
Two other firefighters remain in "guarded condition" at Strong Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds, reported ABC News.
The fire spread to three homes on Lake Road. There was no active shooter remaining on the scene Monday morning but the gunman started shooting on the firefighters first when they responded to the call at 5:45 a.m, reported USA Today. A SWAT team took residents to a bus and escorted them from the neighborhood.
"I'm not aware of anything like this happening in Webster, obviously not a firefighter being fired upon," Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier said to USA Today.
"The whole strip's been evacuated," said Webster resident Micahel Damico.. "They're evacuating all of the houses and going through them."
The incident first occurred when the West Webster Fire District got a report of a car and house fire on Lake Road.
"When they got there, they stated to take on rounds and the initial responders were struck," Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said to CBS.
CBS Affiliate WROC said that at least one house on the road had collapsed due to the flames.
Webster, New York is a lakeside suburb that has seen fires before. Last December a 15-year-old boy set his house on fire and killed his two brothers and father. His mother and sister escaped and survived with injuries.
