New Sony Handheld Gaming Console Similar To PS Vita With Better Features

The PlayStation Vita is one of Sony's least successful ventures and it was no thanks to the existence of the ever-strong Nintendo 3DS and the poor third party support for its games. However, Sony seems to be trying to fight its way back to the handheld gaming scene with another portable console that could be in the making.

Based on Tweak Town's recent report, the Japanese Patent Office have recently published a particular patent, which might provide a clue to Sony's next upcoming console, specifically for the on-the-go gamers. However, unlike the Nintendo Switch, which is just a few weeks away from release, this particular handheld is going to stick with what the PlayStation Vita has been and hopefully, not follow its footsteps.

The patent has appeared at J-Plat Pat, which was originally filed in Aug. 2015 and was just recently published this month. Surprisingly enough, it does look strikingly similar to the Nintendo Switch's layout and seems to be much bigger than the PS Vita. It could be considered as a tablet with portions of the dual shock controller on both sides with two analog sticks.

The patent was one of the biggest surprises, especially for those who have always felt that the PS Vita lacked the support, which caused it to ship enough game variety, especially for North-American owners. This was also after Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, stated that handhelds weren't doing pretty great with the mobile gaming scene slowly taking over.

This would be Sony's chance to redeem the past mistakes that it made with the former PlayStation VITA, but it should be noted that none of these are officially confirmed yet. It could take years before Sony provides any public information regarding the new handheld, which might ultimately replace the VITA. Either way, fans are expecting the handheld to compete with the Nintendo Switch, but people still have their reservations as to how things will turn out.
