A wrong-way minivan crash in Ohio this holiday weekend killed four people and critically injured two others.
With Christmas coming up, road travel is on the rise this week, but for two families, holiday travel turned into a tragedy on early Sunday morning. One minivan was carrying a family leaving a Christmas party while the other was carrying a family that was on their way to visit grandparents for Christmas.
Joshua Nkansah, 40, of Fairfield was driving back from a holiday party with his children when he turned his minivan around on Interstate 75 in Southwestern Ohio and began driving in the wrong direction. The van collided with a van containing carrying Scott and Michele Barhorst of Madisonville, Tenn., and their four children, ages 8-18, according to the Associated Press.
Nkansah and his 7-year old son, David Nkansah died in the crash. Another 4-year old boy was flown to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati with life threatening injuries.
Michelle Marhorst, 31, died at the scene. Her husband, Scott Barhorst, 37, was taken to a hospital in Cincinnati where he later died. Their 9-year-old daughter was taken to Dayton Children's Hospital with life-theatening injuries. Two other children were taken to Middletown hospital for serious injuries and another 18-year old was being treated for minor injuries.
Police believe Nkansah may have been drunk as they could smell alcohol in the van that he was driving the wrong way and they found a bottle of liquor in the vehicle.
After the incident Interstate 75 was closed for several hours on Sunday morning.
