December 21, 2012 is here and it appears that the world didn't end and today isn't doomsday, as many believed that's what the Mayan calendar was suggesting. That means there's still time to enjoy an apocalypse-themed suite at The Roxbury motel in the Catskills.
Feeling optimistic that the world wouldn't actually end on December 21, The Roxbury's new Mayan-themed room opens on December 26, a whole five days after doomsday. The room is part of the new "Archaeologist's Digs" cottage at this "boutique motel resort," the Roxbury website says.
The cottage may appear quaint and normal on the outside, but the inside is a treasure trove of artifacts and memorabilia that make it an archaeologist's dream accommodation. It's also perfect for those who want to pretend that they're Indian Jones for a night after spending a day skiing on the slopes nearby.
With rates starting at $650 a night, up to six people can stay in this cottage that contains three bedrooms. Two of the rooms have king size beds. There is also a queen-size sleeper soda in a living room of the cottage, according to Forbes.
However for those who want a taste of Mayan culture after the world was supposed to end according to the Mayan calendar, the Mayan Temple bedroom had a long full size Murphy bed that comes right out of the wall. The room isn't large, but it's more about the experience than the size.
All guests of the Digs receive complimentary spa passes to use for the duration of their stay. Those who want to stay in the Digs have to leave the young kids at home as kids 12 and under are not allowed in this cottage.
The room comes with some surprises. A 3-D wall sculpture of the face of a Mayan god hides a bedroom. When a lever is pulled, a bedroom is revealed. When guests pull on the nose ring of a Mayan maternity goddess sculpture, the Murphy bed folds down from the wall.
The room also has an illuminated ceiling which represents the Mayan astrological chart and the walls contains carvings of the Mayan numerical system and the Mayan divinity.
For those who are interested in more than just the Mayans, the suite is full of other secret passageways, hidden treasures, idols, reptile skins, hieroglyphics, gold, treasure maps, sultan's tents, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Micronesians, Indians, Romans, Spartans, Arabians, Aztecs, Siamese, Trojans, and even a 400-gallon saltwater aquarium which separates the living room from the Cleopatra's-underwater-tomb-themed bathroom.
While the cottage might focus on all that is ancient, guests can also enjoy modern amenities like a 42" Internet-ready TV,DVD player in the bedrooms and even an iPod docking station.
