Those who believed the world was going to end were in for a disappointment, or a relief, when it turned Dec. 21, 2012 and nothing happened.
Some interpreted the Mayan "Long Count" calendar as predicting an Armageddon or end of the world situation, but what it signified was the end of a 5,125 year cycle in the calendar. Hundreds gathered at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza on Friday to mark the beginning of a new era, not the end of the world, reported CBS News.
55-year-old accountant Genaro Hernandez said to CBS, "This world is being reborn as a better world."
Though the time of when "the world is going to end" is vague, some believe its midnight while other's believed there were later times or off by a few days completely. The National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico suggested that the details of the Mayan Calendar could be as much as a few days off and the cycle could not end until Sunday.
Many believe though that the new era has already begun. "It has already arrived, we are already in it," Ivan Gutierrez, a 37-year-old artist who lives nearby Chichen Itza said to CBS, "We are in a frequency of love, we are in a new vibration."
Bill Leith who is a scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey said there had also been no out of the ordinary seismic activities, volcanoes or solar flares. "It's a fairly unremarkable day on planet Earth today, and in the last few days," Leith said to CBS. "There are no major eruptions going on."
However, many are still worried about the prophetic doomsday and what could happen at midnight. Rumors of mass suicides were spread in Argentina and in China, many members of a Christian group were arrested after they spread rumors about the world ending and said that Jesus had reappeared as a woman in China.
