Mayan Calendar End of the World: Norwegian Cruise Line Celebrates with an End of the World Cruise

Celebrating doomsday at sea are some travelers idea of the ideal way to spend their last day on earth. Norweigan Cruise Lines The Great 2012 (Not The) End of the World Cruise took off on Dec. 16 to the Caribbean and will continue even after the world ends, or so they hope, until Dec. 23.

The cruise features a number of historic and "end of the world themed" events and speakers. Included speakers are "David Brin, Robert J Sawyer, Andre Bormanis, Kevin Grazier, Astronaut Steve Hawley, Michelle Thaller, Erica Ellingson, Nick Schneider, Inga Calvin, Doug Duncan, Timothy Slater and Stephanie Slater," according to the cruise lines website.

All of the speakers have something to do with science or science fiction and some know a thing or two about the Mayan "Long Count" calendar with speculated apocalyptic predictions of doomsday on Friday Dec. 21, 2012. For example, Inga Calvin a Mayan hieroglyphics expert who teaches about it at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be on board and will also lead a tour of the ruins. Steve Hawley who was served on five Space Shuttle flights with NASA will be a part of the speaking crew. He is now a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas.

Panels and discussions include how if the world doesn't end, what hope there will be for a better future and the science of how the universe actually started.

The boat is the acclaimed Norwegian Pearl and will sail into the Western Caribbean. "The Pearl is a Jewel Class cruise ship that includes a chic bowling alley, rock climbing wall, 16 delicious dining options, 13 bars and lounges, casino, spa, pools, fitness center, and much more," states Norwegian's website.

The itinerary includes a take off in Miami to Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico.

On board their will be a host of end of the world activities. Included is an End of the World Masquerade Ball, Takeovers of nightclubs, pools and bars, a Pirate Pub Crawl and shore excursions led by cultural experts and scientists.
