Winter Storm 2012: Christmas Travel to Slow At Major U.S. Airports [VIDEO]

A major winter storm is expected to hit some of the busiest airports in the U.S. within the next few days. USA Today reported that there is a storm developing east of the Rockies with blizzard warnings set for at least six states.

Airlines are now responding to the weather threats by making rebooking policies flexible for fliers that could be affected by the storm. United, Frontier and Southwest are three of the major airlines who are participating in the rebooking policies.

"We've got watches and warnings that spread across 16 states, from New Mexico all the way to Wisconsin and Michigan," said Al Roker, TODAY meteorologist.

Already on Wednesday morning Denver had minor flight delays because of the storm and snow and wind are expected to continue throughout Wednesday afternoon which could cause delays in the evening, reported USA Today.

"Currently, there's only a handful of flight cancellations - mostly commuter flights," said Laura Coale, a Denver International Airport spokeswoman to NBC News.

The storm will then head to the Midwest with blizzards and could disrupt flights at smaller airports in the area then it could hit Chicago by Thursday disrupting O'Hare and Midway, which are major hubs for travel in the U.S.

USA Today reported that Detroit is supposed to see rain and wind starting Thursday and on Friday snow is expected.

In New York by Friday gusty winds, rain and clouds could cause delays at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. Weather Channel meteorologist Brian Fortier to NBC News that the worst weather is centered from the Great Lakes to England on Friday.

"AAA projects more than 93 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, a period that begins this Saturday and ends on Jan. 1. Ninety percent of those on the move are expected to drive," reported NBC News.
