The tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT cannot be undone, but there are things that can be done to honor the 26 victims. A movement called 26 Acts of Kindness is taking social media by storm as people across the country and world find ways to honor those who died in tragedy and find ways to make someone's day better.
This week, Ann Curry of NCB sent out a tweet, asking people to participate in a special movement to honor the victims.
"Imagine if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I'm in. If you are RT. #20Acts," she wrote.Thousands saw the message and are responding with the ways in which they are showing kindness. Whne Curry started the tweet, it was to honor the 20 children who were killed in the massacre, but six adults also lost their lives, so to honor all of the victims, people on social media increased it to 26 Acts of Kindness.
A Facebook page was started about the movement. The 26 Acts of Kindness Facebook page says "Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, Ann Curry took to social media and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown."The Facebook page was started by 34-year-old Warren Tidwell. He was inspired after watching the coverage of the shooting.
"I sat there watching the coverage and I was crushed, and hopeless, and helpless," the Alabama man told KSL. "I have a 4-year-old son who will be going to kindergarten next year, and it just felt like the right thing to do."
He kicked off the movement by giving a stranger he met in a grocery store a box of chocolates with the message ""To honor the 26 taken from us at Sandy Hook, we are doing 26 acts of kindness. You are #1."
The Facebook page has about 4,000 like and it keeps growing as people learn about this movement. There are also popular hashtags on Twitter like #20Acts, #26Acts, #26ActsofKindness, and more which are taking over the site as people share their stories of how they're showing kindness.
Curry retweeted some of the responses she received.
People from all over the world are inspired by this movement and are participating.
