The world's oldest person at 115 years old has died. Less than two weeks ago, Dina Manfredini took the title as the world oldest person. She was living in Iowa at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston and died on Monday morning, though her cause of death is currently unknown.
The Associated Press reported that her granddaughter Lori Logli would not elaborate on her death but did say that she had a fever. When Besse Cooper of Georgia died at 116, Manfredini took the title less than two weeks ago.
Manfredini was born on April 4, 1897 in Italy and she moved to the U.S. in 1920 when she decided to settle in Des Moines, Iowa with her husband.
Logli said about her grandmother to the AP, "She was active her whole life. She was a very giving person." Manfredini also was known for being a great cook and baked Italian bread for her family every week.
"She could not believe that she was as old as she was," Logli said,"When we would tell her she would just shake her head in disbelief. She'd say, 'Oh, I'm an old lady.'"
Manfredini had four children, seven grandchildren and more than 12 great grand children.
Robert Young who is a senior consultant of gerontology for the Guiness Book of World Records stated that Jiroemon Kimura a Japanese man may now be the oldest person alive, just 15 days younger than Manfredini. Kimura lives in Kyoto, japan and is believed to be the oldest man in documented history.
The AP reported that officials are checking Kimura's age and expect to announce his title as oldest living person shortly.
Officials have confirmed Kimura's age, and now are checking in with the retirement home where he lives. They expect to announce his title shortly.
