Adele was the most honored singer at the 2017 Grammy Awards when she won five trophies including the Album of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she mentioned her black friends which started the social media fury of those who heard her speech.
She said, "I can't possibly accept this award. And I'm very humbled and I'm very grateful and gracious. But my artist of my life is Beyoncé." Then she added, "And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my "black friends" feel, is empowering. And you make them stand up for themselves."
The morning after, #blackfriends flooded Twitter as fans reacted to the multi-awarded singer's statements as reported by Page Six. A user named Aicha Marhfour tweeted, "She accepted the award anyway. + talking about how Bey empowers her 'black' friends? What a demonstration of privilege."
A user named Average Joe American wrote, "Why did she have to classify her friends and her black friends. Aren't they all just her friends?" However, there are those who replied in defense of the "Hello" singer. "I really hope ya'll don't make my 'black friends' an issue that forces Adele to apologize," a woman named Queen Ashley wrote. "Because she is absolutely right! That album was for us and she acknowledged it. Was she not supposed to mention her black friends??"
Most of Beyonce and Adele's fans believe she was right about giving credit to Beyonce's album being a tribute to black women. Adele got the most Grammy awards according to CNN. She won the Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album aside from the Album of the Year.
The backlash did not dampen the spirit of rejoicing for the mother-of-one. She has all the reasons to be ecstatic these days. She has Angelo, 4, and Simon Konecki who inspired her to work for the victory.
