Nintendo's latest console, the Switch, is just a few more weeks away from being released. This brings a bit of concern to the owners of the Wii U as the company has announced the cease for its production last year. However, some owners of the dedicated handheld console, particularly the 3DS, also feel a bit uneasy with the latest console's arrival. Here are some pointers to take note of though regarding the co-existence of both platforms and why the former will stay around for longer.
The first thing that may come to mind is how the Nintendo Switch will greatly affect the 3DS. This isn't just limited to the sales, which consumers aren't exactly all that concerned about every time. However, this may affect the future software releases for Nintendo's dedicated handheld and this can certainly be true as it was evident with the company's transitions between its hardware. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima did verify this possibility (via Bloomberg).
It may seem possible for the 3DS to meet its demise soon after the release of the Nintendo Switch, but aside from the fact that Nintendo has made a promise to keep its support for the handheld at least until 2018 (via Telegraph), it still has its own niché; kids.
Yes, The Nintendo 3DS has several mature games, which aren't exactly intended for the younger audiences to play, but this doesn't take away the fact that the handheld consoles has an awfully impressive amount of games in its library. This is one of the main reasons why it stayed alive for so long and still has a much larger demographic than Sony's PlayStation VITA. This fact dwarfs the Nintendo Switch's current library of launch titles as well as those that are scheduled to be released for later.
The Nintendo 3DS or the New 3DS would still keep its dedicated consumers not just because it has more games. Among other reasons, the price difference between the two is almost a dead giveaway, making the smaller handheld a better choice for those who would like to consider getting their first Nintendo gaming platform, which will eventually interest them to moving up to the bigger Nintendo Switch.
All facts taken, there's no real reason to doubt the 3DS, co-existing with the Nintendo Switch, but we're just a few more years away from seeing how the Switch will evolve. Hopefully, this is for the good and that making the upgrade from the smaller handheld to it, justified.
