'Fire Emblem Heroes' Review: Why Fans Find It Lacking & Why They Should Not

'Fire Emblem' is, no doubt, one of the greatest series in Nintendo's history of video game franchise. It made its way through almost every platform, the company dished out and there weren't much, but praises for every entry. However, things might be a bit different with "Fire Emblem Heroes" and a little more like the same bland free-to-play mobile game formula.

"Fire Emblem Heroes" is Nintendo's one of the company's three mobile games per year promise and it would seem that fans have quickly wrapped themselves up in the hype as it was released. However, there appear to be some shortcomings that veterans, as well as newcomers, find to be too much of a glaring issue.

As several review sites like Gamespot sees it, "Fie Emblem Heroes" is practically a bit-sized experience straight out of the franchise, but has a huge limitation, especially on how much, one can play for extended periods. For some, it may be a very good introduction to the series, but some experienced players find it too limiting.

Mainly, the game's goal is to have players earn Orbs in order to unlock characters from the entire "Fire Emblem" universe "randomly." This is the usual formula used by so many free to play mobile games and surprisingly enough, they actually work for its intended audience.

On the core gameplay side, "Fire Emblem Heroes" however shines as the main combat mechanic is streamlined for touch-screen based controls. The punishing perma-death was also removed, encouraging players to do more trial and error, especially on harder maps.

Grinding is something people can expect with the game, but this is normal with most mobile games. However, continued playing requires replenishing stamina. Players could get past these by purchasing more with money and while seeing this as a paywall, this is, in fact, perfectly normal for a free-to-play mobile game.

Strategy and mechanics in "Fire Emblem Heroes" are tight and is almost on par with its handheld counterparts. However, the limitations imposed by the Stamina and the "gachapon" style acquisition of heroes could sometimes hinder the sense of enjoyment. Nevertheless, people still need to keep in mind that on top of being a free-to-play mobile game, it can still manage to be a "Fire Emblem" game that feels right. The story, however, might be different for players of the usual releases on the 3DS and more so, with the consoles like the Wii U.
