After eight years working as an island caretaker -- considered "The Best Job In The World" -- Hampshire travel hero Ben Southall is now moving on from his island to work in his own company with his wife as they travel the world. Committed to traveling the world instead of his former work as island caretaker, Ben and Sophee Southall would tell their stories from their journeys in their blog, "The Best Life In The World."
Indeed, to travel the world is the best life in the world -- but it does come with a few stressful caveats. But according to Ben, "Life is pretty cool" only if you are doing everything, including work, "with the person you love" even "if it can throw up a few testing situations." He said enjoying the amazing sights the world has to offer -- and getting paid for it -- is one of the benefits of traveling and working together.
In an interview with The Daily Mail UK, Ben Southall said his career in events management -- his former employment before winning his "Island Caretaker" stint -- is completely over. Traveling and lifestyle is now his thing.
Ben Southall won a 2009 competition where 34,000 applicants including himself competed to become Hamilton Island's first caretaker. The career of "Island Caretaker" involved "feeding the fish", "cleaning the pool" and "collecting the mail" while earning about AU$150,000 ($115,000) in total for the six-month contract according to the official job listing.
Ben Southall was single during his occupation as island caretaker. He met Sophee when he was an emcee for an awards ceremony in WIthsundays. The two had journeyed all over the world as "roving reporters" and had worked with National Geographic and an Australian Kids show called "Totally Wild," according to BBC. Southall adds his travel with Sophee had helped keep his wanderlust alive.
