The exact number of deaths is unknown, but officials are speculating that "at least 12" may be a conservative estimate. The shooter, who police say is likely a parent of a student who may have had a confrontation with the principal, is said to be among the fatalities.

ABC news reported that one gunman is dead in a classroom at the elementary school and there are reports that there could have been a second gunman. Reports say that the shooter appeared at the school's main office at approximately 9:40 a.m. Students have been taken out of the building and transported to a nearby firehouse.

CNN reported that there has not been confirmation if any of those injured or killed were children but three wounded people were in "very serious" condition at Danbury Hospital.

The weapons that were found on the shooter was a Glock and a SIG Sauer. At this time it is uncomfirmed whether or not the police were the ones who killed the suspect.

A third grader told CNN affiliate WTNH that she was sitting in her classroom when police came in.

"We saw police officers and we heard them on our roof and in our building," she said.

Her father said to WTNH, "I was pretty shaken up."

WABC reported that officials are also saying that the shooter is likely a parent of a student who had a confrontation with the principal.

Police have gone throughout the classrooms at the school to make sure that the area is clear and authorities are searching the area, reports WABC.

The school has more than 600 children and goes from kindgergarten through fourth grade.
