The 12.12.12 Sandy Relief benefit concert in New York's Madison Square Park rocked on Wednesday with big-name headliners such as Billy Joel, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. But the Paul McCartney and Nirvana collaboration was one performance that stood out.
Ahead of the event, word spread that McCartney would take the stage as Nirvana's front man singing for Kurt Kobain who tragically killed himself in 1994, with other Nirvana members, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.
McCartney gets on stage and said to the crowd, "So recently, some guys asked me to go and jam with them. So I showed up like you do, ready to jam. And in the middle of it these guys kept saying, we haven't played together for years. The penny finally dropped, I finally understood that I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion."
They then went on to perform a song called, "Cut Me Some Slack," to a cheering crowd. MTV reported that Grohl tweeted that the song would be the first from the soundtrack to his upcoming documentary, "Sound City."
The former Beatle admitted to know really knowing who they were. He said to The Sun, "I didn't really know who they were," he said. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."
Kurt Cobain's rocker widow, Courtney Love said to TMZ that she wasn't exactly happy about the "reunion." She said, "Look, if John (Lennon) were alive it would be cool."
Proceeds from the concert went to the Robin Hood Relief Fund which is the largest independent poverty fighting organization in the New York area.
