The nurse in the Kate Middleton prank call controversy left a suicide before taking her own life.
Jacintha Saldanha was found dead after she became the subject of a prank phone call in which an Australian radio station was able to find out details about Middleton's stay in King Edward VII Hospital. It has been revealed that Saldanha left her family a suicide note before she killed herself, according to the Daily Mail.
It is not clear what the suicide note said, but it was addressed to her family. It is believed that the note may explain why she decided to end her life.
Australian DJ's Mel Greig and Michael Christian of 2Day FM pulled a prank on Saldanha last Tuesday, when Middleton was at the hospital for morning sickness. The DJ's pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and got nurse Saldanha to reveal information about the Duchess' condition.
The prank call received worldwide attention. Three days later, the 46-year-old mother of two was found dead near the hospital.
According to Saldanha's brother, Naveen, "She would have felt much shame about the incident." This feeling of shame may have been part of the reason she took her own life.
"I am devastated with the tragic loss of my beloved wife Jacintha in tragic circumstances," Saldanha's husband Ben Barboza wrote it a note on Facebook.
An autopsy has begun on Saldanha's body.
The DJ's behind the prank call deeply regret the incident and said it was meant to be harmless. They never expected this outcome.
"There's not a minute that goes by that we don't think about her family and what they must be going through," 2DayFM radio host Mel Greig said, according to USA Today. "And the thought that we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching."
The DJ's radio show has been pulled off the air until further notice and they have gone into hiding. They are also seeing counselors over the ordeal.
