In Jerusalem, someone stole several F-16 fighter engines that are worth millions. MSN reported that the fighter engines were stolen from an airbase in central Israeel and it is suspected that the robbers had help from the inside.
MSN reported that air force officials said to Israel's Walla website that investigations have shown that the heist occurred over the past few days. No signs of forced entry were found, reported Police to MSN which could mean that they were able to come in and out through the gate at the base.
Israel's Defense Forces said to Army Radio on Friday that the serious crimes unit of the Military Police has launched an investigation on the incident.
JTA.com reported that Israel's Walla website stated that the engines weigh over 1.5 tons and are even more than 15 feet long. The military base that they were stolen from has been unspecified.
In June of last year there were reports that F15 and F16 engines were stolen from the Tel Nof air base which is near Rehovot, Israel, reports MSN. JTA reported that in July Bedouin metal thieves came into the IDF base in Tze'elim in the Negev and stole ammunition, and they traveled in large SUVs.
The F15 jets could be used as scrap metal, but officials do not know what the engines are going to be used for or if the robbers were just after the metal.
U.S. government officials have made little comment on the situation however Lieutenant Colonel Jack Miller said, "This is something you'll want to most likely talk to the Israelis about. Obviously we have had a longstanding relationship with the Israelis and we'll continue to."
