The Christian activist group Million Moms has publicly stated that they are offended by JCPenney's new advertisements starring Ellen DeGeneres. The Christmas commercials feature openly-gay comedian DeGeneres, meeting with elves from Santa's workshop. In humorous-spirits DeGeneres makes jokes about the elves being small, while trying to ask them to make more toys for the giveaway contest.
"I know this is no small feat." Says Ellen, who then tries to correct herself, "Well, it's a big deal," and then says, "Who wants a cookie?"
One Million Mom's said about the ad, "Since April, JCPenney's has not aired Ellen DeGeneres in one of their commercials until now. A new JCP ad features Ellen and three elves. JCP has made their choice to offend a huge majority of their customers again. Christians must now vote with their wallets. We have contacted JC Penney's several times in the past with our concerns, and they will not listen. They have decided to ignore our complaints so we will avoid them at all costs."
The Huffington Post reported that the activist group petitioned against DeGeners for being in the ads and called for the removal of the commercial to JCPenny.
The group is an anti-gay, conservative Christian group and has spoken out about Ellen being the spokesperson for JCPenney in the past.
"Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families," One Million Moms said on its website. "By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."
One Million Mom's has protested a number of TV shows and companies including Urban Outfitters, who showed two women kissing in their catologue, the TV Show "Park Avenue 666" and "The New Normal" for featuring gay couples.
