Pennsylvania Is the World's Pizza Capital: A Claim That Everyone Didn't Know About

The word "pizza" is always connected to places like Naples, Italy and Brooklyn, New York. These places have been dubbed as the originators of the most famous dish that everybody loves. However, Pennsylvania seems to be claiming the title as the world's pizza capital and it's something that everybody didn't know about.

It may be an arguable claim but USA Today reported that the town of Old Forge, Pennsylvania might be able to prove it with its history in pizza making. The town was a mining district back then and miners would go to a pizza café (as the locals call it) named Ghigiarelli's after a long day at work.

Ghigiarelli's was started by Grandma Ghigiarelli in 1926 were she would serve the iconic Old Forge pizza. This unique style of pizza is served on metal pans and is rectangular in shape which became very popular to the miners. A lot of people say that Ghigiarelli's was the originator of the Old Forge pizza.

According to Penn Live, a lot of the locals made recipes of their own to attract miners and customers back in the day. Different pizza cafés would have their own variations of the Old Forge pizza with their cheese mixtures, spices and sauce blends.

Nowadays, there are lots of pizza cafés in the area that serve the Old Forge pizza. It has a distinct texture compared to the normal thick crust pizza. It's much lighter with a crisp finish at the bottom and a gooey center and the locals don't call it pizza pie.

It may vary a little bit depending on who's making it but there are always two determining factors and that is getting the perfect crust and baking it on a rectangular metal pan. There are two choices to choose from and that is the red and white pizza.

It's the red pizza that would define the Old Forge pizza perfectly with its sweet sauce, diced onions and a mix of different cheeses. The white pizza is more like a stuffed pizza with cheese fillings and veggies in the middle, topped with herbs and onion slices.
