The Golden State Warriors star guard Stephen Curry is standing by Under Armour, the sports apparel company that he is endorsing, despite the company's CEO saying that President Donald Trump is an "asset" to the country. CEO Kevin Plank clarified to Curry that he was speaking from a business perspective.
According to a report from Marcus Thompson II of The Mercury News, Curry said, during an exclusive interview with them, that he was surprised that Plank was praising Trump, considering he knows where the CEO stood. He said he thought he was sure where Plank had stood "based on his track record."
Curry said that he was on the phone "with countless people at Under Armour, countless people in Kevin Plank's camp," as he was trying to understand where everybody is standing. After talking to Plank, Curry said that he stands by the company.
"That's the brand I know he's built and one that, as of Wednesday afternoon, is something that I'm standing on," Curry said. Thompson said that Plank told Curry that his comments were "meant exclusively from a business perspective."
Plank clarified to Curry that he distanced himself the president's controversial policies that have angered Muslims, Mexicans, African-Americans, the impoverished across the nation, and women. A separate report from The Mercury News shows Under Armour's full statement following Plank's praise on Trump.
The statement said that Plank was invited by the president, along with CEOs from companies such as Dell, Ford, GE, Dow Chemical, and Tesla to have an important dialogue about creating jobs in the U.S. Under Armour believes in the importance of being part of that discussion.
"We have always been committed to developing innovative ways to support and invest in American jobs and manufacturing," the company said in the statement. "For years, Under Armour has had a long-term strategy for domestic manufacturing."
For Curry, who is Under Armour's most popular endorser and who has a contract with the company through 2024, said that it's not a deal breaker for him if the company is working with Trump. His concern is more about the company adopting the values of Trump. Check out in the video below how valuable Stephen Curry is to Under Armour, making the company $1 billion in valuation in three months.
