Tom Brady has long been regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but some have never considered him to be the greatest. On Sunday, Brady may have finally cemented himself on the very top of the list after he orchestrated an amazing 25-point comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in Superbowl LI for his fifth Superbowl title.
The Falcons' high-octane offense got off to a good start in the first half and even found themselves up 28 to 3 at one point. Tom Brady and the rest of the team's offensive unit appeared a bit lost during the first half and could not get anything going. The Falcons were able to pressure Brady well which was enough to force their first-half possessions to lead into three punts, a fumble, an interception, and a field goal just before halftime. Entering Sunday's game, no team had ever won the Superbowl after trailing by more than 10 points.
Brady walked away with his fourth Superbowl MVP trophy - an NFL record. He had also earned MVP honors in 2001, 2003 and 2014. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels calls Brady "the best ever" saying there is no flinch in the future Hall-of-Famer. Brady completed 43 of 62 passes, the most attempts in Superbowl history. He finished the game with 466 yards and two touchdowns.
His 466 passing yards broke the previous Superbowl record held by Kurt Warner who passed for 414 yards 17 years ago in Superbowl 34. He also recorded his first interception returned for a touchdown in any playoff game in his career when Falcons cornerback Robert Alford picked off one of his passes in the second quarter and returned it 82 yards for an Atlanta touchdown.
The Falcons looked to be on their way to victory after going up 28-3 with only 8 minutes 31 seconds left in the third. However, Brady went hot from that point completing 26 of 33 passes as New England would go on to score on their last five full possessions in both regulation and overtime combined. Per ESPN, Brady's heroics also prevented league MVP Matt Ryan from completing a sweep of the major awards in the NFL. According to The Washington Post, Brady dedicated this Superbowl victory to his mother Galynn who is battling cancer.
