A serial killer who is in jail in Alaska was found dead in his jail cell on Sunday, reported the Reuters. Israel Keyes died during an apparent suicide, officials have said. He was in jail after admitting to the abduction of an 18 year old woman, Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska.
There have not been any details released about Keyes' death.
Reuters reported that Keyes has also admitted to killing a couple in Vermont in June 2011 and up to five more people, whom he did not name.
Kevin Feldis, Assistant U.S. Attorney, said after a press conference to Reuters, "He did tell us that he had killed other people and that there were bodies of up to four other people in Washington state, as well as a body disposed of in New York state."
Koenig disappeared from a coffee stand in February and Keyes was tracked down after he used a debit card that was owned by Koenig. In early April, Koenig's body was found in a lake north of Anchorage. Keyes' admitted to using a chainsaw on the ice covered lake to drop her body in, reported Reuters.
The couple that Keyes' killed, Bill and Lorraine Currier were reported missing in June 2011. They were believed to be abducted from their home in Essex, Vermont, reported the LA Times. The Anchorage Daily News reported that Keyes' admitted to killing the Vermont couple and he said he put their bodies in an abandoned farmhouse which has since been torn down.
A spokesperson for Samantha Koenig's family said that they wanted Keyes to go before a jury for his crimes.
The LA Times reported about Keyes that, law enforcement said he was a "methodical and a frequent traveler, able to conceal his actions and dispose of his victims' bodies without easy discovery."
Keyes was a carpenter and Army veteran and moved to Anchorage in 2007. He was scheduled for trial in March.
