A couple was found driving cross country with their children in the back of a moving van and more than a dozen cats. WTRV, A CBS affiliate in Virgina, reported that authorities said they got a call from an anonymous source that said they were a relative. They said that the truck had left Pennsylvania on Wednesday and that a mother, father and their seven children as well as a number of cuts were in the small truck.
USA Today reported that David K. Detjen, 41, and Rebecca S. Detjen, 40 who are from Fairmont City, Pennsylvania were charged with four felony counts of neglect of a dependent and are currently in Henry County Jail with a bond set at $5,000.
Their children, six minors and one adult daughter are with Child Protective Services.
USA Today reported that they told authorities that they were driving cross country to California for a job opportunity.
Troopers watched out for the truck and found it before 10 p.m. Wednesday at a Flying "J" truck stop close to Spiceland, Indiana, reported USA Today.
WTRV reported that they troopers lifted the back hatch of the truck and found five children from the ages of 9 to 18 inside the trailer as well as 18 cats. The cats and children were crammed alongside all of their belongings that they were moving cross country for a job opportunity.
Two other children, 14 and 15 years old sat in the front of the truck, reported USA Today.
Sgt. John Bowling said to WRTV, "They were wearing coats and they had sleeping bags but they had no way to communicate with their parents in the front of the truck."
The cats have been taken in custody by Henry County Animal Control.
