Episode 492 of "Naruto Shippuden" shows Shikamaru trying to battle back against Gengo only to be saved at the last moment by Temari, Ino, and Choji. Some fans, though, are not happy with the scene that involves Gengo trying to control Shikamaru.
As Shikamaru and his team were held captive, Gengo wasted no time in trying to convert them to join his side. It appears he started with Ro, as he was thrown back into prison, while Sai and Shikamaru are having a conversation about Sai's betrayal.
Then it was Soku's turn, using genjutsu, through his words, to get her to join Gengo. When it was Shikamaru's turn, Gengo brought him to a laboratory where they are growing a certain type of flower.
There Gengo tried to use genjutsu to control Shikamaru and it seems he is succeeding until Shikamaru discovers that the flowers are what Gengo is using to brainwash people. When he asked for his comrades, the guards accompanying them removed their cloak, revealing themselves to be Ro and Soku, already under the enemy's control.
Shikamaru was able to escape being captured and used that time to come up with a counter attack. He returned to Gengo's room to take on his two former comrades and take down Gengo.
He seemed to be succeeding, even using Soku's attack to hit him in the ear, to avoid hearing Gengo's words. But just as he was about to strike Gengo, Sai, who was searching for him, appeared and stopped his counter attack. Gengo fled the room then Soku was able to hit Shikamaru in the forehead and defeating him.
Just when things look bleak, something blasted through the wall, knocking the enemies down. It was revealed to be Ino, Choji, and Temari, who gave Shikamaru a slap in the face for lying to her. The slap, though, knocked some sense into Shikamaru, and he asked the others to take care of the rest, while he goes after Gengo.
Not all the fans, though, was happy with the episode, particularly the scene where Gengo is trying to control Shikamaru. A Reddit user commented in a Reddit discussion page that the anime was different from the novel, in that Shikamaru was brainwashed in the novel and Temari was the one who was able to make him snap out of it.
Several other users agreed with the comment, saying that the scene in the novel should have been kept the same. Fans in the MyAnimeList forum enjoyed the episode, though, especially the scene where Temari, Ino, and Choji busted in to save Shikamaru.
