Hurtigruten Cruises has added a overnight camping excursion to its Antarctica cruise. The cruise line says of its Antarctica cruise on its website, "See the planet's last untouched continent, experiencing it from one of the most advanced expedition ships ever built. This voyage will take us through the Drake Passage, escorted by albatrosses and storm petrels before arriving at the magical white landscape. You will experience the continent in summer with its incredible wildlife including seals, penguins and whales."
USA Today reported that the ship fits 256 passengers and costs $500 per person to camp. Mona Ringstrand who is explorer product manager at Hurtigruten ASA said to USA Today, "The idea is to offer our guests an authentic experience in the spirit of the great explorer, (Roald) Amundsen."
The cruise will have two guides that will travel with every 15 passengers and guests will pitch tents that fit two people. Gear for Antarctic weather will also be provided. On the camping itinerary is walks, sun rise views and listening to polar sounds, while meals will still be served on the ship, reports USA Today.
Due to weather, the trip will be offered from December to Febraury. Hurtigruten offers a variety of trips to Antarctica which all start in Buenos Aires. The cruise lines website says about Antarctica, "You will begin to see Antarctic penguins in the water and don't forget to be on the lookout for the first iceberg. There are no permanent human inhabitants but it is home to millions of penguins and the feeding area for thousands of whales. Words simply cannot describe the feeling of being on the Great White Continent. The ice, wind and weather dictate life in Antarctica as well as our route. Every voyage is unique and our experienced crew will make all voyages an experience of a lifetime."
