The Powerball jackpot is at a record $500 million for the Wednesday, November 28 drawing. If someone wins, they'll get a $327.4 million cash prize, which would be a pretty spectacular holiday present for the holidays.
The jackpot grew on Tuesday after a significant increase in ticket sales. The jackpot was previously listed at $425 million, which would be a $278.3 million cash prize.
In Pennsylvania alone, more than $64 million in Powerball tickets were sold on Tuesday by noon. Powerball tickets were sellin at $6,700 a minute.
The Powerball jackpot is a record for the game. Only one U.S. lottery jackpot has ever been larger. On March 30, 2012, the Mega Million jackpot was $656 million. The payout was a $471 million cash prize.
"Pennsylvania Lottery players are very excited about this record Powerball jackpot, and that excitement is being reflected in our ticket sales," Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci said in a release. "We urge our players to purchase their Powerball tickets early to avoid a last-minute rush, and to always play responsibly."
This Powerball jackpot has been running since Oct. 6. There has been 15 drawings without a winner.
Anyone who wants to play the Powerball has until 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday evening. A Powerball ticket starts at $2 for five numbers between one and 59, plus a bonus number from one to 35. Players can pick their own numbers or they may choose computer-generated quick pick numbers.
To win, all five numbers plus the bonus Powerball number must match the numbers that are drawn. There are other prizes for matching some of the numbers.
The Powerball is opened to those 18 and older in 42 US States, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.
