A couple of California contractors struck gold when they weren't even looking for it. They found $300k in gold dust in an old home during an HVAC installation.
According to CBS Sacramento, Steve Ottley and a coworker of Clark & Rush found the secret gold stash stored in 12 baby food jars hidden away in the floor grill of the Sacramento house back in September. The treasure is worth $300,000.
"I still can't believe it today," Ottley said of the discovery. "It's unreal. We kind of just looked at each other and said 'wow'."
"I looked at it and said, 'I think that's gold,'" he continued.
Clark & Rush, which is celebrating its golden anniversary of 50 years, can't guarantee that they'll find gold every time, but they can guarantee that what they find will rightfully go to the homeowners.
"That's one promise we can't make, but I can say this, the integrity and professionalism of Clark & Rush, every time we find this type of thing, we are always trustworthy and upfront," Mark Thyne told CBS.
The men were on a heating and air system installation call when they found the gold. The cost of the installation was $6,500. The lucky homeowners, who wanted to remain anonymous, will have no problem paying it off with the discovered gold.
While it is certainly rare to discover gold during an HVAC installation, this isn't the first time if happened to Clark & Rush. In the 1980's workers found $25,000 worth of gold coins during an installation.
It is not clear where the gold originally came from, but it could have come from a previous homeowner who stashed it away and died before he could tell anyone about it.
