"In This Corner of the World" is a hit Japanese animated historical drama film which was released last year in Japan. The "beautiful and deeply moving" film will soon be distributed in North America, thanks to Shout! Factory and London-based anime producer and distributor Animatsu Entertainment.
The Hollywood Reporter said that the award-winning manga by Fumiyo Kouno and written and directed by Sunao Katabuchi follows the story of a young lady named Suzu Urano who lived during 1944. She moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband's family, but her life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during the World War II.
The beautiful animated tale shows the perseverance and courage of Suzu Urano underpin this inspirational tale of everyday challenges. It proves that even in adversity and loss, people can build their lives by coming together.
Andrew Hewson, Animatsu's Head of Acquisitions & Marketing, said that the film is very unique and exquisite, and this only comes around once every few decades. He added that Animatsu is "incredibly proud" to be involved in it and that Shout! Factory is a perfect partner.
Part of the official announcement said that "In This Corner of the World" is bolstered by emotionally resonant storytelling along with exquisite hand-drawn animation, and tells and empowering " a coming-of-age tale that captures the resilience and triumph of the human spirit." The announcement was made by Shout! Factory's founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos; and Animatsu Entertainment's Chief Operating Officer, Jerome Mazandarani.
According to Variety, "In This Corner of the World" is planned for a theatrical release in the United States and Canada from summer this year. Shout! Factory secured all distribution rights - meaning theatrical, VOD, digital, broadcast and home entertainment rights - for cross-platform releases in the U.S. and Canada.
