Actor Christian Bale has declined to start in the movie, "Child 44." The Wrap.com reported that the movie which is a Scott Free Production and will be directed by Daniel Espinosa is about a member of the Soviet military police who is investigating child murder cases, after which he becomes the target of the government. The Wrap confirmed that Bale met with filmmakers on Tuesday.
The movie is based on the novel by Tom Rob Smith and is being written by Richard Price.
"At the center of the story is Leo Demidov, a disgraced lawyer in the Stalin-era Soviet Union who is assigned to investigate the murders. The book is based on the true story of the Ukrainian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, who was executed for 52 murders," reports The Wrap.
The book is critically acclaimed and won a number of awards. It won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award in 2008 and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Smith won the Galaxy Book Award for Best new writer in 2008.
In 2007, the book was optioned into a movie before it was even published and was in 2008. It was in waiting until Ridley Scott first picked it up but now Daniel Espinosa who directed movies such as "Safehouse" is on it.
The Wrap confirmed that Fox and Ridley Scott are no longer attached to the movie. Bale is a highly acclaimed actor whose long line of films include "The Dark Knight Rises" and The Fighter."
Bale's acting career started at an early age and he got attention with his role in Empire of the Sun in 1987. From then on he's gone to star in a number of films.
