Texas wants to secede from the union in a recent petition submitted to the Whitehouse. ABC News reported that the petition appeared on the White House website, "We the People" section where users can submit petitions about policy changes. The petition must reach 25,000 signatures in 30 days for the Obama administration to comment on. ABC News reported that the Texas seceding petition reached the appropriate number of signatures.
The petition which was submitted on Friday asks to, "Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government." A number of other states have also been on the petition asking to also secede, including "New Jersey, New York, Montana, Colorado, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Oregon and Michigan. The closest behind Texas was Louisiana with 15,617 signatures," reported ABC News.
The Huffington Post reported that Texas Governor Rick Perry does not support the petition. Catherine Frazier who is his press secretary said to The Dallas Morning News that Perry, "believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government. Now more than ever our country needs strong leadership from states like Texas, that are making tough decisions to live within their means, keep taxes low and provide opportunities to job creators so their citizens can provide for their families and prosper."
Perry, once said at a Tea party rally about seceding from the union to CNN, "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."
The Obama administration has yet to comment on Texas' petition to secede and form its own government.
