Chinese Airline Tests Potential Pilots For Body Odor By Sniffing Armpits

When applying for a job, people have to make sure that they reach all of the requirements. Those who apply to work for Hainan Airlines better make sure that they shower and use deodorant. One of the requirements to be a pilot is zero body odor and recruiters even perform smell checks.

According to SZNews, Hainan Airlines won't hire anyone with bad body odor. In addition to having 20/20 vision, a maximum height of 6' 2", and the ability to speak and write in English, pilots must also smell clean.

To make sure that candidates pass the test, recruiters actually smell their underarms at a testing center in the Taiyuan, Shanxi province in China. The potential recruits included those who were fresh out of college.

It may seem strange that recruiters would care about the smell of a pilot, who spends most of the time in the cockpit, but one Hainan Airlines tester tried to explain to reasoning to Oddity Central.

"Our staff works very closely with the public, and no passenger wants to smell a pilot's armpits. And if they can keep their cool in this test, they aren't going to sweat in the cockpit," the tester said.

One of the tested applicants reached every requirement, but they didn't fare so well during the sniff test.

"I passed everything, but I was doomed by my armpits, which are always a bit whiffy", the applicant said, according to Oddity Central.

It isn't rare for airline employees to be judged on superficial things. Flight attendants are often hired based on their looks.
