On Tuesday Nov. 6, Maryland was one state that voted to legalize same-sex marriage in the state. The same day, the Baltimore tourist bureau launched a new area of its website that has information for same-sex couples wanting to tie the knot.
The website includes information on venues and accomodations in Baltimore and information on how to obtain a marriage license in Baltimore. The website states, "On November 6, 2012, the citizens of Maryland voted to enact the Civil Marriage Protection Act which legalized same sex marriage. Starting on January 1, 2013, same sex couples will be granted the right to marry in Maryland. Maryland is one of the first states to allow gay marriage through a voter referendum, demonstrating the welcoming nature of the 'Free State.'"
USA Today reported that Visit Baltimore is helping with lodging, venues and group rates. In a press release, Visit Baltimore's CEO said, "We encourage the LGBT (lesbian/gay/bi/transgender) community to visit Baltimore to celebrate their commitments to one another ... the legalization of same-sex marriage is another important step forward."
Maryland and Maine became two states on Nov. 6 to pass the legaliztion of marriage for same-sex couples in their states. Washington's ballots were still being counted. To date other states where gay marriage is legal includes Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and DC.
Matt McTighe, the campaign director of Mainers United for Marriage said to the Wall Street Journal about the Maine victory, "That will serve as something of a signal to other states who have lost marriage fights before at ballot boxes. You can change those minds."
