Hurricane Sandy hit down hard on New York and surrounding areas. However the superstorm was just a first hit for some. A woman in Long Island was told leave the hotel that she evacuated to for the storm.
Sue Chadwick, of Bayville, Long Island, left her home before Hurricane Sandy hit. She took shelter in a Extended Stay America hotel room in Melville. She booked the hotel to the end of next week, but she and other guests were told to leave to make room for other people who were displaced by the storm.
Chadwick cannot live in her own home as Hurricane Sandy made it uninhabitable.
"It's not like I'm there on business and could catch the next plane out," she said according to CBS. "There are people in worse shape, but I just feel like when people are in these dire circumstances, you don't want to make it worse."
Chadwick must live in Vermont with family members. After being forced to leave the hotel, she needs to take time off of work until she can return home.
Finding an available hotel room has been difficult after Hurricane Sandy hit. Many houses in New York and New Jersey were destroyed. Some were flooded, some collapsed, and some were burnt to the ground. Some people are looking for other living situations as their neighborhoods are in ruins and still left without power, heat, or hot water.
Some victims in Long Island and New York City had to go as far as Albany, New York to find an available hotel room.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that it will pay for hotel rooms for victims that are currently living in shelters due to the storm.
