"Pokémon Go" players have been waiting patiently for some information from Niantic ever since the game's special holiday event came to an end. The developers have finally released some information about a new patch for the game, and it might not ring well for most Pokémon Go players.
Niantic has posted the official patch notes on their website and it states that one of the most significant changes brought about by the new update is the "distance tracking to better account for GPS drift." This is the term for whenever a player's character changes locations due to problems experienced by the phone's GPS service.
As reported by Forbes, even the smallest shifts can affect "Pokémon Go" in a huge way since certain features such as egg hatching are tracked using your phone's GPS service. In layman's terms, this can trick the game into thinking that a player is moving around even when they are not. The latest Pokémon Go update has fixed that, which in turn has nerfed the egg hatching feature.
Whenever you play "Pokemon Go" you might notice your character moving around slightly, but sometimes they can jump around from place to place even if you're not doing anything. This is known as "GPS drift", a phenomenon wherein the satellites get confused about a player's current location. This means the player can either move around a little bit or be jumping all over the place.
Egg hatching and buddy distance are two features in Pokémon Go that are tracked through your phone's GPS feature. Any small drifts registered on the GPS will eventually accumulate and add up over time. This will make it look like players are moving great distances even when they aren't even taking a single step. The new "Pokémon Go" update also includes a few minor text fixes and introduces Apple Watch functionality which lets the device display the eggs obtained from Poke Stops.
