Due to Hurricane Sandy the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island are closed for the foreseeable future. NBC News reported that there is water damage and no power on both Ellis Island and Liberty Island where, the Statue of Liberty is.
Despite the closing of both islands the statue has not been harmed from the storm. Mindi Rambo who is a spokeswoman for the National Parks of New York Harbor. said to NBC News, "An initial assessment has indicated that the statue itself, from the base to the torch, is fine."
NBC News reported that the area was flooded and a team is scheduled to arrive on Friday to asses the damage. Until that occurs they won't know the full extent of the damage. Rambo added to NBC News, "Until the assessment is done, we cannot determine when both islands will reopen."
Before Sandy the Statue of Liberty's crown was all set to reopen after a year of renovations. The crown was supposed to be open the Sunday before Hurricane Sandy hit but now the island will be closed until damage can be assessed and renovations can be done on the damage. People had purchased tickets in order to get great views of the city from the crown, which boasts an amazing view of the skyline.
NBC News reported that the grounds and docks are not in good shape.
"Right now, we need to take this one step at a time and our first step is to make sure that all the parks employees are safe and are OK going forward," said Rambo to NBC News.
