A 15-year-old Pakistani girl was killed by her parents because she looked at a boy, The Associated Press has reported.
The AP reported that her parents, Mohammad Zafar and Zaheen Zafar, have been accused of killing her by pouring acid on her because she ruined the family's honor by looking at a boy. The AP reported that they said this in an interview on the BBC.
The young girls father said to the BBC that they were scared that she would bring "dishonor on the family" and her mother said it was her "destiny" to die that way.
Honor killings are a major issue in Pakistan and The BBC reported that Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported that 943 women have been killed in honor killings just last year.
The AP reported that a report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said, "throughout the year, women were callously killed in the name of honor when they went against family wishes in any way, or even on the basis of suspicion that they did so. Women were sometimes killed in the name of honor over property disputes and inheritance rights."
The 15-year-old girl named Anusha was found with burns over her body, the BBC reported.
"There was a boy who came by on a motorcycle. She (Anusha) turned to look at him twice. I told her before not to do that, it's wrong. People talk about us because our older daughter was the same way," Anusha's father said to the BBC.
Anusha's mother said to the BBC," She said 'I didn't do it on purpose. I won't look again.' By then I had already thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way."
The BBC reported that Anusha was beaten by her father then acid was pourded over her with the help of her mother and she wasn't taken to the hospital until the following morning by her parents.
