Race 2 Recover NYC, a new website was created on Friday to helped displaced individuals from Hurricane Sandy into hotel rooms this past weekend. ABC News reported that Race 2 Recover's goal was to give hotel rooms that were originally reserved for runners in the New York City marathon and donate those to displaced New Yorkers that would have not been used.
Race 2 Recover's website states, "With the cancellation of the 2012 ING NYC Marathon, we know that there are 47,000 disappointed runners across the globe. And in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, thousands of NYC residents have lost power, water, and some have even lost their homes. We can't undo the tragedy that's befallen the New York City area in the past week, but we're here to help find the good amongst the rubble. Marathoners donate their hotel rooms. Sandy's displaced victims get a place to stay. We all win."
The easy to use website allows runners to donate their room to those in need and race 2 recover will call the hotels directly to transfer the reservation. New Yorkers can also submit their information and they will give them a room on first come first serve basis.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the race that was supposed to take place Sunday Nov. 4 after massive criticism. As of Saturday Nov. 3 ABC News reported that Race 2 Recover has received 25 room donations.
ABC News reported that Conley Downing started the website. "The hotel room receiver must put a credit card number on file to cover any additional hotel charges such as damages that may occur during the time of stay. The website is also specific to displaced New Yorkers only, which is verified by submitting a New York address. Downing said most hotels have been very accommodating with the transfer of the rooms," reported ABC News.
