In the fall of 2012 the Golden State Warriors signed Steph Curry to a four year contract worth $44 million. He had just been limited to only 26 games that year after suffering an ankle injury and many were starting to doubt if he could ever stay healthy throughout his career. Now after three straight All Star appearances, back-to-back MVP awards - including being named the first unanimous MVP in NBA history - and an NBA championship, it is fair to say that Steph will be getting a huge raise this summer once his current contract ends.
He will become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career this summer, and you can expect that a player of Steph Curry's calibre will have a lot of suitors lining up to acquire his services. However, the 9-year veteran out of Davidson says he currently sees no reason to leave the only team he has ever played for in his entire career.
"I can't. Like I've said from Day 1 when I was asked about free agency, this is a perfect place to play. Bay Area fans are amazing, our organization's amazing, we've put together an amazing team that's competing for championships every year. There's really no reason that I can see right now that would draw me elsewhere", Curry said during an interview with Tim Kawakami of The Mercury News.
While Curry has said that leaving Golden State is not something that holds any interest for him at this time, he has also mentioned about playing back at his hometown of Charlotte, N.C., which happens to be where the Hornets are located. He says it's hard for him to see himself playing anywhere else besides the Bay Area, but made it known that "curve balls happen all the time."
Curry can expect to get paid good money wherever he goes once free agency hits, but he can get paid handsomely should he remain with the Warriors, which looks to be the likely scenario at this point. The league's new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will allow him to become the first player to have a max contract worth $200 million, as reported by ESPN. The winning culture in Golden State and the potential to earn a boatload of money through the new CBA are a couple of reasons why Steph won't be leaving the Warriors anytime soon.
